Reading now: Liraglutide: Costs are being reduced

Weight loss with a syringe - that is no longer a niche phenomenon. But while medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro dominate the headlines, an exciting alternative is now arriving for those seeking effective support at a more affordable price: Nevolat® - the new liraglutide generic, which will be available in Germany at the beginning of January.

What is Nevolat®?

Nevolat® is a new prescription generic version of the well-known medication Saxenda by Novo Nordisk. Both contain the identical active ingredient: 3.0 mg of liraglutide per day, a so-called GLP-1 receptor agonist originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, but which has also proven effective for medically supervised weight loss.

What does liraglutide do?

Liraglutide acts on the body's natural satiety system. It slows down stomach emptying, suppresses feelings of hunger, and thus helps you feel full faster and eat less - all without a constant battle against appetite or cravings. In studies, the active ingredient was able to support sustainable weight loss of up to 10% - especially in combination with dietary changes and exercise.

What is a generic?

A generic is a follow-up version of a brand-name medication that can be manufactured and sold once the patent protection of the original has expired. A generic contains the same active ingredient in the same dosage, works just as well in the body, and is tested according to the same safety and quality standards. It may only differ in name, packaging, color, or excipients, but not in efficacy or safety.

This means: Nevolat® works just like Saxenda, but is significantly cheaper because development costs and patent rights are no longer applicable. It is produced by the established manufacturer Zentiva, which is approved in the EU and stands for high pharmaceutical standards.

Liraglutide costs: What will the price of the new generic be?

A frequent barrier to starting treatment with GLP-1 medications is the high monthly cost. Many people would like to use liraglutide to reduce their weight with medical supervision - but the price of the original medication is often beyond what is affordable in everyday life.

With Nevolat®, a more cost-effective generic is now entering the market, finally making this therapy accessible to more people. It is planned that Nevolat will be available in two different pack sizes – one specifically for starting and dosage titration, the other for long-term use.

Compared to the brand-name product, Nevolat® will be significantly cheaper. Compared to Saxenda, you save around 30% to 50% of the monthly costs, with the same active ingredient, same effect, and same safety – just under a new name.

Especially for people who do not receive cost coverage from health insurance or whose budget is limited, Nevolat® could be the decisive alternative for receiving medically supported and scientifically sound weight loss guidance.

Saxenda or Nevolat® - What are the differences?

The short answer: There are hardly any differences. Nevolat® contains the identical active ingredient liraglutide as Saxenda. Both medications:

  • are injected daily
  • have an identical dosing schedule (increasing from 0.6 mg to 3.0 mg)
  • act on the GLP-1 receptor in the body
  • have been used in studies for weight reduction

Nevolat® vs. Saxenda: Which is better?

At first glance, Nevolat® and Saxenda are almost identical.

But there are still differences that may be relevant for your decision:

Liraglutide: Side effects are possible

The most common side effects of Nevolat® and/or liraglutide are:

  • Nausea and feeling of fullness
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort (constipation or diarrhea)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headaches or fatigue

These side effects often occur only in the first few weeks. That is why it is important to start with the initial dose of 0.6 mg and slowly increase to 3.0 mg.

Rare but relevant risks: pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney damage, hypoglycemia, potentially increased risk of medullary thyroid carcinoma (animal studies, human relevance unclear).

Tips for tolerance & managing side effects

The first few weeks with liraglutide are an adjustment phase for many users. Side effects like nausea, fullness, constipation, or fatigue occur particularly often during the dose escalation phase. But the good news is: with a few simple tips, many of these discomforts can be significantly alleviated.

What helps against typical side effects?

  • Drink plenty of fluids: Ensure adequate fluid intake - at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day. This supports digestion and can mitigate the feeling of fullness.
  • Eat slowly & small portions: If you chew well and eat consciously, your stomach is less burdened. You should avoid large or fatty meals, as they can worsen nausea.
  • High-fiber diet: Vegetables, whole grain products, oats, or flaxseeds promote digestion and prevent constipation.
  • Light exercise: A daily walk or moderate activity stimulates metabolism and bowel activity.
  • Slow dose increase: If you notice that the next dose level is difficult for you, a slower escalation may be sensible after consultation with your doctor.

Medical guidance remains important

Even if many side effects are harmless and temporary, you should definitely seek medical advice if symptoms persist or are severe. This applies especially to persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, circulatory problems, or pre-existing conditions like gallbladder or thyroid issues.

Good medical guidance at the start of treatment helps clarify uncertainties and tailor the therapy optimally to you.

Liraglutide syringe - Nevolat® Pen: How does the application work?

Treatment with liraglutide is carried out via a daily injection with a pen, also called a liraglutide syringe. The active ingredient is injected subcutaneously, i.e., under the skin, once daily. The application is simple and is performed in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.

Especially at the beginning, it is important to increase the dose slowly to minimize side effects. Many patients report that they got used to the daily application after a few days.

The Nevolat® Pen: Simple and practical to use

Nevolat® is supplied in the form of a pre-filled pen, similar to what is known from Saxenda or insulin pens. The Nevolat® Pen contains multiple doses and allows for precise dosing in 0.6 increments up to the target dose of 3.0 mg daily.

The advantages:

  • No daily refilling or mixing necessary
  • Clear dosing scale for every week
  • Discreet application at home or on the go
  • Simple, safe, and intuitive. Also for people who have little previous experience with injections.

How is Nevolat® used?

The application is performed once daily via injection with the Nevolat® Pen. The pen contains multiple doses. The Nevolat® Pen is filled with 3 ml (18 mg liraglutide) and functions analogously to Saxenda when dosing all daily levels from 0.6 to 3.0 mg. Thus, no new syringe is needed daily.

In a 5-pack, the pens at 3 mg/day last exactly for about 30 days. During the dose escalation phase (0.6 - 3.0 mg), one pen can last longer at lower dosages. Dosing schedule:

Nevolat Liraglutid

How effective is the medication Nevolat® for weight loss?

Studies on Saxenda have shown: In randomized studies on weight loss with 3 mg of liraglutide daily: average weight loss between 5% and 11.5% after 56 and 52 weeks, respectively, with combined intensive behavioral therapy (IBT). In the USA and UK, Nevolat is already being used successfully, with comparable results to Saxenda.

Important: Nevolat does not work overnight. You will achieve the best results if you integrate it into a healthy lifestyle - with exercise and conscious nutrition.

Liraglutide cost coverage: Does health insurance pay?

As a rule, statutory health insurance companies do not cover the costs of liraglutide if it is used exclusively for weight loss. Like Saxenda, Nevolat is also a service that must be paid for privately.

Exception: In cases of obesity with a BMI over 30, or over 27 with comorbidities (e.g., high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes), an application for reimbursement may be sensible in individual cases. It is best to talk to your doctor about this. Do you want to know if your health insurance might cover the costs?

Saxenda generics: Why a real alternative is now on the market

Saxenda has been on the market in Germany since 2015 and has established itself as an effective medication for weight loss. But with the expiration of patent protection, the way is now clear for generics like Nevolat®, which contain the same active ingredient at significantly lower prices.

Saxenda generics like Nevolat® finally make GLP-1 therapy more affordable. For many people who have abstained until now for financial reasons, the new generic can be the entry point into effective weight treatment - without any compromises in efficacy or safety.

Why is generic liraglutide cheaper than Saxenda?

Generics are created after patent expiration without expensive new clinical developments, which saves costs. Teva, Hikma, and other manufacturers are already offering generic liraglutide in the USA - with significant price drops of up to 80% compared to the brand name.

Nevolat® vs. Wegovy & Mounjaro: More than just a price question

Of course, the active ingredients semaglutide and tirzepatide are currently considered the most modern GLP-1 medications, primarily because they only need to be injected once a week and have shown even stronger weight loss in some studies. But that does not automatically make Nevolat the worse choice, on the contrary:

Nevolat® offers several advantages that go beyond the low price:

  • Daily injection = constant effect: Liraglutide does not build up such strong fluctuations in effect as weekly preparations. This can be an advantage, for example, for sensitive individuals.
  • Better tolerance at a low dose: Many start with 0.6 mg - a gentle introduction with a significantly lower side effect rate.
  • Proven active ingredient with long-term experience: Liraglutide has been approved for weight reduction since 2015. There is very good safety data - in some cases even better documented than for newer active ingredients.
  • Availability: While there are recurring supply bottlenecks for Wegovy and Mounjaro in Germany, Nevolat® as a generic is expected to have stable availability.
  • Flexible dosing progression: The daily pen allows for individual adjustments. This is ideal for people who react particularly sensitively to changes.

Ozempic generics: Are there any yet?

Ozempic contains the active ingredient semaglutide and is also a GLP-1 receptor agonist, but is more potent than liraglutide and only needs to be injected once a week. Many are now waiting for Ozempic generics to save costs here as well.

The bad news: Semaglutide is still patent-protected. Generics are expected to reach the market only from 2026 to 2032 - depending on the respective country. Until then, Nevolat remains the only available generic in this drug class.

Wegovy generics: When can they be expected?

Wegovy is the version of semaglutide specifically approved for weight loss, with a particularly strong effect. Here, too, a generic is often sought.

But similar to Ozempic, the following applies: Patent protection still exists, and there will be no official generic in the coming years. Anyone currently looking for a cheaper GLP-1 medication is therefore best advised to use liraglutide generics like Nevolat®.

Realistically for Europe and Germany, generics for Ozempic/Wegovy can be expected from the years 2028-2032 and generics for tirzepatide (Mounjaro) not before 2036-2041.

Frequently asked questions about Nevolat:

What is the difference between Saxenda and Nevolat®?

Nevolat® is a generic of Saxenda with the identical active ingredient (liraglutide). It is cheaper, but just as effective and safe.

Is Nevolat an Ozempic generic?

No. Ozempic contains semaglutide, while Nevolat® contains liraglutide. These are different active ingredients. Semaglutide is stronger but also significantly more expensive. Liraglutide remains a sensible option for many due to price and availability.

How long does a pack of Nevolat® last?

The starter pack with 3 pens lasts for approx. 1 month (dose escalation phase), the 5-pack for about 30 days at the full dose.

Can you buy Nevolat® at the pharmacy?

Yes - but only with a prescription. Nevolat® is a prescription medication and can be bought in Germany starting in September at local pharmacies or mail-order pharmacies - provided you have a valid private prescription.

Cost coverage by statutory health insurance is currently not intended, so the treatment must be paid for privately.

Can I order Nevolat® online?

Yes, with a medical prescription. As soon as Nevolat® is available in Germany, you can also obtain it online through mail-order pharmacies or specialized online clinics, but always on a prescription basis.

For this, you need either a private prescription from your doctor or an online consultation with a telemedicine provider who issues the prescription digitally. Shipping then takes place discreetly directly to your home.

Conclusion: Saxenda generics like Nevolat® make GLP-1 treatment for overweight and obesity possible

With Nevolat®, there is finally movement in the market: Same active ingredient, significantly cheaper, simple application, and available in Germany this year. Experiences from the USA/UK show that generic liraglutide is effective for many people, with suitability for everyday use and typical initial reactions. If you have been hesitant so far because of the costs, now is the right time to start the treatment.
